I can’t quite put my finger on it…but it gets me more excited then anything. Just the excitement of entire towns for 1 week. They get behind their kids that have qualified and pay $100s or even $1000s of dollars for a week of wrestling. I think the parents enjoy it halfway just to get to the hotel and have a few social drinks with other parents…But, that’s always after about 14 straight hours of wrestling that day.
There’s nothing more exciting than watching someone work SO hard…and watch their dream finally come true. To watch it all pay off. You know it’s their last chance to do that something special, to qualify for the state tournament. Some people are meant to win state, some are meant to place at state, and for others qualifying for state is the best they can attain. Heck, some weren’t even meant to qualify for state but out of sheer determination and willpower they do.
It is the culmination of 4 straight years of hard work. Of being down at the weight room 4 days a week. Of doing extra springs after practice. Of driving all over the state for wrestling camps. Of getting your butt kicked every day in practice. It is doing something that you weren’t expect to do.
That’s what I love about state wrestling…The HEART.
